Time
Few directors have caused as much controversy in Korea as Kim Ki Duk in his decade of filmmaking. Despite much acclaim overseas with wins at Venice and Berlin Film Festivals, of the maverick filmmaker's twelve films, only 2001's Bad Guy was able to register a blip at the domestic box office, in part due to Jo Jae Hyun's (Piano) popularity. His latest controversial work, Time, risked an even worse fate in Korea. Kim only acquiesced to a limited release in late August 2006, after an online petition signed by over 10,000 netizens showed there were Koreans out there interested in Kim's latest film.
Plastic surgery has become a hot topic in Korea, covered in films ranging from horrors like Cinderella to romantic comedies like 200 Pounds Beauty. Kim addresses this controversial theme in a slightly different way. Se Hee (Sung Hyun Ah) and Ji Woo (Ha Jung Woo - The Unforgiven) have been together for years, but their relationship is slowly dying down, their love changing into a mere mildly pleasing familiarity. To solve her problems, Se Hee makes a drastic decision: change her facial appearances completely through plastic surgery and start a new life. Weeks later, Ji Woo meets a strange waitress at a cafe. She calls herself Sae Hee and, even though he's never seen her before, something feels strangely familiar...
Breath
One of Taiwan's best actors, Chang Chen (Eros), teams up with maverick Korean director Kim Ki Duk (Time) for Breath, a bittersweet love story between a death row inmate and a woman who feels betrayed by her husband's infidelity. Breath enjoyed international exposure through screenings at a handful of prestigious film festivals including the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Stepping away from his usual style marked by sensationalism and violence, Kim offers plenty of humanism and realism, along with beautiful cinematography that complements the film's atmosphere. Through the contrasting lives of these two protagonists, Breath finds a common ground that blurs the line dividing life and death.
Death row convict Jang Jin (Chang Chen) attempts to hasten his death sentence by stabbing himself in the neck with a sharpened toothbrush, only to fail miserably, leaving him temporarily mute. The unfortunate incident reaches the national news, catching the attention of housewife Yeon (Park Jia of Kim Ki Duk's Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... And Spring). On the surface, Yeon's life resembles the ideal picture - a good husband (Ha Jung Woo, Time, The Unforgiven), a stable livelihood. But beneath that shell lies sadness and torment over her husband's extramarital affairs. Jang Jin's story hits close to her heart, leading her to a new path, as she dares to leave her usual life to meet the convict in prison. Ironically, it's inside a cold and dark place where all of life's pleasure and privileges have been stripped away that both Yeon and Jang Jin begin a remarkable healing process. But reality remains stern and cold for the condemned, as death penetrates through the iron bars, still demanding for his last breath.
