Korea's latest horror film Arang is loosely based on Arang Tale, a famous folk tale in which the ghost of a minister's daughter solicits a governor to help her settle her grudge. Ahn Sang Hoon, assistant director of ...ing and director of the 2004 short "Pass Over", has been busily preparing Arang (previously titled Line), his feature debut, for the last few years. His efforts have produced an eerie, interesting film that transcends the typical summer horror flick by focusing on characters and personal horrors rather than predictable thrill elements.
Arang starts out with the usual duo of detectives. Song Yoon Ah (Hotelier and Lost in Love) is So Young, a seasoned veteran who just returned from suspension, while rookie Hyun Gi is played by My Girl's Lee Dong Wook in his film debut. Investigating a serial killer case, the two find clues leading them to a young girl violently murdered in a rural village ten years earlier. Plagued by external and internal ghosts, the detectives must unravel the disturbing mystery.

줄거리 (Synopsis)

의문의 연쇄 살인 사건…, 그리고 한 소녀의 원혼!

세 번의 연쇄 살인 사건. 이들 현장에서 발견된 단서라고는, 피해자들의 컴퓨터에 떠있는 민정이란 소녀의 홈페이지가 유일하다. 정직됐다가 막 복귀한 여형사 소영(송윤아 분)은, 신참 현기(이동욱 분)와 한 팀이 되어 이 사건을 수사하게 된다. 이후 소영은 이들 세 명의 피해자가 친구 사이이며 모두 ‘민정’과 관련이 있음을 알게 된다. 이에 소영은 피해자들의 친구인 의사 동민(이종수 분)을 유력한 용의자로 지목하고 조사를 시작한다.

그러던 어느 날, 동민마저 살해되는 사건이 발생한다. 네 번의 연쇄 살인 사건 현장에서 모두 발견된 민정의 홈페이지. 민정에 대해 수사하던 소영과 현기는, 그녀가 10년 전에 갑자기 실종됐다는 것과 이들 4명의 피해자들과 만난 적이 있음을 알게 된다. 이에 민정이 살았다는 바닷가 한 마을을 찾게 된 소영은, 그곳에서 기괴한 소문을 듣게 된다. 다름 아닌, 폐염전 근처 한 소금창고에 귀신이 나타난다는 것! 마을 사람들을 모두 공포에 휩싸이게 한 그 곳을 다녀온 소영은, 이후 매일 밤 꿈에서 한 소녀의 원혼을 보기 시작하는데…
