Having already showed his flair for horror in the Korea-Thai-Hong Kong joint production Three (2002), Korean director Kim Ji Woon chooses an old Chosun Dynasty tale called Janghwa Hongryeon as his inspiration for the 2003 psycho-thriller A Tale of Two Sisters. Shocking the world with this deathly pallor of the family drama and the sheer panic of impending horror, A Tale of Two Sisters not only enjoyed success in Asia, but also attracted the attention of Hollywood. DreamWorks, one of the biggest Hollywood movie studios, has an American remake planned.
After stints in a mental hospital, Su Mi (Lim Soo Jung, ...ing) and Su Yeon (Moon Geun Young, My Little Bride), two sisters from a rich family, move in with their eccentric stepmother, only to find their conditions worsened thanks to an unbalanced parental figure and a pesky ghost. Su Yeon has nightmares about her mother's death and relies on her older sister for emotional protection. The new stepmother dreams of a perfect family and treats her two stepdaughters with both manic affection and frightening frostiness. The father observes taciturnly and remains isolated.

To make matters worse for this dysfunctional family, otherworldly horrors lurk at every corner. A ghost crawls behind a clothing trunk, a freakish woman hides under the sink, and a bloody sack containing a corpse leaves a trail of red on the wooden floor. Are these specters real or just hallucinations? And who is the real ghost?
